Participating in a reading and writing community nurtures a deep appreciation for literature. It also builds critical thinking, effective communication, and collaborative skills. The purpose of this unit is not to practise a reading or writing strategy; instead, it aims to build reading and writing habits and routines that will be practised throughout the year, enabling students to become active readers and writers.
By immersing ourselves in a supportive literary environment, we are not just learning to be readers and writers of today but growing into informed, articulate, and imaginative leaders of tomorrow.
In this unit we will:
Establish what is a reading and writing community and explore how our classroom can function as a ‘reading and writing community.’
Cultivate reading habits by setting reading goals, choosing ‘just right’ books and having book talks.
Cultivating writing habits by understanding the writing process and reasons behind why we write.
